LONDON: Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, survived an Israeli missile strike on 28 February by seconds after stepping into a garden moments before the attack, according to a leaked audio recording obtained by The Telegraph.
The recording, attributed to Mazaher Hosseini, the head of protocol for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s office, provides the first detailed account of what happened inside the supreme leader’s compound when it came under fire . Hosseini delivered the statement to senior clerics and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders at a meeting in Tehran’s Qolhak neighborhood on 12 March.
According to the report, Mojtaba Khamenei was in the same building as his father during a critical leadership meeting when Israeli Blue Sparrow ballistic missiles struck the residence at 9.32am local time . The new supreme leader had stepped outside “to do something” in the yard moments before the attack.
Hosseini described how Mojtaba Khamenei was heading back upstairs when the missile struck the building . “God’s will was that Mojtaba had to go out to the yard to do something and then return,” he said in the recording. “He was outside and was heading upstairs when they struck the building with a missile. His wife, Haddad, was martyred instantly”.
The attack killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with Mohammad Pakpour, the IRGC chief, and Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran’s defence minister. Mojtaba Khamenei sustained only a minor leg injury. Hosseini revealed that the new supreme leader’s wife and son were killed instantly, while his brother-in-law, Misbah al-Huda Bagheri Kani, was decapitated.
