ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced plans to modernize Islamabad’s police stations by transforming them into “Smart Police Stations.” This initiative aims to enhance law enforcement practices in the capital.
During a progress review meeting on Saturday, Naqvi highlighted the necessity of moving away from traditional policing methods, which he described as symbols of fear and intimidation. The meeting, which included Federal Interior Secretary Khurram Ali Agha, CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, DIG Operations, and other senior officials, focused on the upgrades required for the police stations.
Naqvi noted that many citizens are reluctant to approach police stations due to their outdated and intimidating environments. Reflecting on his own visits, he observed the poor conditions that deter public engagement. “Islamabad is the face of Pakistan,” Naqvi remarked, stressing the importance of adopting smart policing to bring the capital up to international standards. He assured that the necessary resources would be allocated to support this transition.
As part of the upgrade, Naqvi announced that polite and well-educated officers would be stationed in the newly upgraded Smart Police Stations, which will be modernized in phases. He instructed the team to create cost-effective yet high-quality designs for these stations and to secure appropriate land for those currently housed in unsuitable buildings.
While specific details on the implementation of the “smart” police stations were not provided, Naqvi emphasized that merit would be upheld in the recruitment of new officers for Islamabad Police. He stressed that only the most qualified, educated, and deserving candidates would be chosen. Additionally, Naqvi highlighted the need to improve police behavior towards citizens, ensuring a more respectful and efficient approach to law enforcement.
