WASHINGTON: Israeli media have given prominent coverage to growing concerns over a possible US strike on Iran, with reports suggesting Israel is preparing to play an “active role” rather than remain a bystander.
Security analysts who are monitoring tensions between Tehran told daily Metro Morning that Washington and Tel Aviv have warned in recent days that any conflict could prove prolonged and highly destabilizing for the region. They said the Israeli daily Maariv reported that, in light of rising tension, Israel is “prepared for every possible scenario”.
The paper said that with friction increasing between Iran and the groups it backs across the region, the Israeli leadership has stepped up its readiness. The report also cited a warning from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said that if an attack takes place, Israel would respond in a way “they [Iran] cannot even imagine.”
According to Maariv, the current deadlock between Washington and Tehran shows no sign of easing, with the situation described as tense and fluid. Another leading newspaper, Haaretz, said the United States is accelerating preparations for a potential strike, while Israel is acting as though it is already part of those plans.
The paper said Israel does not see itself in a secondary role but rather as an active participant from the outset of any confrontation. There has been no official confirmation from Washington or Tehran that military action is imminent.
