GAZA: The ongoing conflict in Gaza saw another tragic escalation on Thursday when at least 17 Palestinians, including children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school in Nuseirat camp. According to officials at Al-Awda hospital in Nuseirat, the school had been housing displaced people who had sought refuge from the relentless fighting. The Israeli military later confirmed that it had targeted what it claimed was a Hamas command and control center, reportedly embedded in a compound that was previously used as a school.
The incident is part of the broader violence that has engulfed the Gaza Strip as Israel continues its military campaign, now approaching its second year, with casualties mounting on an almost daily basis. The conflict, which has claimed nearly 43,000 lives in Gaza, has drawn intense international scrutiny and calls for ceasefire. However, hopes for any de-escalation, including through the killing of Yahya Sinwar, a prominent Hamas leader, have so far failed to materialize. Despite international pressure urging Israel to seize this moment as an opportunity for peace, the fighting has intensified, particularly in northern Gaza.
In the town of Jabalia, which has been at the center of a weeks-long Israeli operation, evacuations of civilians have taken place, with more than 200 innocent Palestinians reportedly detained by Israeli forces. Residents of Jabalia describe a dire situation, trapped between airstrikes and advancing tanks. “We are being besieged, starved, and hunted by the occupation from the air and from tanks,” said one resident, as Israeli forces maintain their grip on the area. The Israeli military has consistently framed its operations as targeting Hamas militants, but reports from the ground tell a different story, with civilians often caught in the crossfire.
At the Indonesian Hospital, one of the last remaining medical facilities in the northern part of the enclave, medics reported that a colleague had been killed by Israeli fire, while another was detained on his way to work. Health officials at the hospital, along with two others in the region, have made desperate appeals for assistance, stating they are completely out of medical supplies, food, and fuel. Despite Israeli orders to evacuate, they have refused to abandon their patients, further complicating the already catastrophic humanitarian situation.
