SUKKUR: Kashif Saeed Sheikh, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, said that poverty in Sindh could only be addressed through good governance, anti-corruption measures, and the implementation of an Islamic system of justice, rather than temporary handouts such as the BISP program or livestock distributions.
The JI leader made the remarks while speaking at an iftar dinner for journalists in Sukkur, highlighting what he described as systemic failures in provincial administration. He criticized the Pakistan People’s Party for its 18-year rule in Sindh, pointing to corruption, nepotism, and poor governance as major contributors to worsening social conditions.
Sheikh cited Sukkur, the province’s third-largest city, as an example, noting that residents continued to struggle with inadequate drinking water, street crime, and a lack of basic amenities despite the city’s location on a major river.
Announcing a new initiative, Sheikh said Jamaat-e-Islami had launched a “Change the System, Improve Sindh” movement. He said a full-scale campaign would begin after Eid, aimed at promoting reforms and improving governance across the province. Other speakers at the event included Hafiz Nasrullah Channa, Allama Hizbullah Jakhro, Zubair Hafeez Sheikh, and Mujahid Channa, who echoed calls for systemic change and better public service delivery.
Sheikh also addressed international issues, condemning the killings of Muslims in Gaza and Kashmir and criticizing global leaders, including Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, for policies he said harmed Iran and Palestine. He urged the Pakistani government to take practical measures in support of oppressed Iranian Muslims, rather than limiting itself to verbal condemnations.
