KHYBER: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader and former Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan delivered a passionate address at a month-long protest sit-in in Begyari Jamrud, criticizing ongoing military operations in the newly merged Tribal Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His remarks highlighted the ineffectiveness of past military campaigns and the severe consequences faced by local communities.
In his speech, Khan rejected the notion of initiating any new military operations in the tribal areas, including Tirrah Valley of Khyber, asserting that previous operations had failed to resolve the militancy issue. He condemned the military for its claims of dismantling terrorist networks, accusing the leadership of misleading the nation about the actual situation on the ground. He expressed frustration over the destruction caused by past military operations, which he said had devastated local infrastructure, including guest houses, homes, forests, and irrigation systems.
Khan emphasized that these areas, particularly the Tirrah Valley, had suffered immensely, with the Afridi Koki Khel tribe displaced from their homeland fourteen years ago and still living in dire conditions as internally displaced persons (IDPs). He criticized the federal and provincial governments, along with security forces, for not providing adequate compensation or support to the displaced Koki Khel tribe, contrasting their situation with the more favorable treatment received by the people of Swat.
The former senator called for immediate action to facilitate their return to their homeland and urged the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the situation. Khan lamented the ongoing neglect of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, accusing the ruling elite of being indifferent to the plight of these regions. He condemned the government’s inaction on widespread terrorism, including bomb blasts and kidnappings, and criticized elected representatives from Khyber and other tribal districts for failing to address the grievances of the Afridi Koki Khel tribe.
Reiterating his commitment, Khan assured that Jamaat-e-Islami and he personally would stand with the Koki Khel tribe until they are peacefully returned to their homeland in Rajgal, Tirrah Valley. He also condemned the reported police FIRs against the tribe’s elders, labeling them as illegal and unjustified, and called for their withdrawal. Khan’s remarks underscore the continuing challenges faced by the tribal communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and reflect ongoing discontent with the handling of military and governmental responses to militancy and displacement in the region.
