The sit-in. demanding end to unjust taxes and soaring electricity bills, has received widespread support

RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced a significant march towards Murree Road on Thursday, marking the 14th consecutive day of their sit-in protest against escalating living costs and soaring electricity bills. This extended demonstration underscores the growing public discontent, with JI workers, local traders, and various organizations rallying in support.

Despite persistent heavy rain the previous night, which forced demonstrators to seek refuge under a metro shed, the protest continued unabated. The day began with Fajr prayers at the protest camp, followed by site cleaning and the provision of breakfast for participants. The Rawalpindi sit-in is part of a larger series of protests, including similar actions at the Governor House in Karachi and another planned for Peshawar on August 12. These demonstrations address multiple grievances, including agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), perceived unjust taxes, and the high costs of electricity, petrol, and gas.

Recent developments include a report from Attaullah Tarar regarding progress following the fourth round of negotiations with the government. During these discussions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif committed to reducing electricity prices. As part of this agreement, a subsidy of 50 billion rupees will be provided to consumers using up to 200 units of electricity during the months of June, July, and August. Furthermore, a task force has been established to review issues related to IPPs, with the Prime Minister’s office actively working to address remaining concerns.

The ongoing protests and the government’s commitments reflect intense public scrutiny of economic policies and increasing pressure on the administration to tackle the rising cost of essential services. The effectiveness of the promised relief measures and the outcome of the negotiations will be closely monitored by both protesters and the general public.
