KARACHI: Monem Zafar Khan, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, accompanied by Deputy Ameer Saifuddin Advocate and town chairmen, met Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Monday at the Sindh Secretariat to raise urgent concerns over the city’s persistent water and sewerage problems.
Speaking at the meeting, Monem Zafar said that despite repeated assurances from the government, long-standing issues remain unresolved. He highlighted the lack of clean drinking water, poor sanitation, overflowing sewers, uncollected garbage, and piles of waste across various parts of the city. Open manholes, he noted, pose serious risks to public safety.
Monem Zafar added that even during the winter, large parts of Karachi are deprived of water, with some areas receiving none for months. He described water scarcity as the city’s most pressing issue. He urged the minister to address the complaints immediately and implement practical measures to ease public hardships.
Zafar stressed that officials and staff of the Karachi Water Corporation and the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board should be held accountable for their responsibilities.
Minister Nasir Hussain Shah assured full cooperation, issuing directives to officials present at the meeting to address all submitted complaints, establish a monitoring mechanism, and develop an integrated system for water supply, sewerage, and garbage collection. He also promised follow-up meetings to review progress and ensure the resolution of issues. Earlier, JI town chairmen had outlined the deteriorating conditions caused by inefficiency and a lack of seriousness within the Water Corporation and Solid Waste Management Board. The meeting was attended by CEO of the Water Corporation Asadullah Khan, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board official Tariq Nizami, and other concerned officers.
