KARACHI: Thirty workers of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) arrested during a peaceful protest outside the Sindh Assembly on February 14 were released from Central Jail on Friday following orders from an Anti-Terrorism Court. The demonstration had been organized to demand citizens’ rights, resolution of civic issues, and the establishment of an empowered local government, but police used baton charges and tear gas, arresting scores of participants and filing terrorism charges against them.

Upon their release, the workers were welcomed at Idara Noor-e-Haq with garlands, rose petals, and a spirited rally from Jail Chowrangi amid slogans and high enthusiasm. Deputy Ameer of JI Pakistan Dr. Usama Razi, Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan, and other party leaders received the workers.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Razi accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of acting as the “establishment’s A-Plus team,” claiming it has held Karachi hostage. He said, “Our only red line is the Constitution of Pakistan. We do not accept any fabricated red lines. We will accept no restriction other than the supremacy of the Constitution and law.” He criticised the provincial government for registering terrorism charges against peaceful protesters and described the current political setup as a “hidden martial law” targeting Karachi.

Dr. Razi also noted that roads now declared “red zones” had historically been used for PPP rallies and said senior leaders should have been consulted regarding such restrictions. He reaffirmed JI’s right to protest at the Sindh Assembly and Chief Minister House.

JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar stated that the “Haq Do Karachi” movement has evolved into the “Jeene Do Karachi” movement and vowed that the struggle for Karachi’s rights would continue, with major protest gatherings planned at 13 locations across the city during Ramazan.

The reception was also attended by Opposition Leader in Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Saifuddin Advocate, Karachi Secretary Taufiq-ud-Din, Information Secretary Zahid Askari, Advocate Tahir Malik, who represented the detained workers, and members of the Islamic Lawyers Movement.
