KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University actively participated in “Ik Sham Maon K Naam”, an initiative focused on enhancing maternal healthcare and safeguarding women’s lives. The event was hosted by the Gynecology and Obstetrics Ward 9B of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre under the leadership of Dr Nighat Ali Shah, pro vice-chancellor of JSMU, along with her team.
Healthcare leaders, policymakers, and faculty members emphasized the urgent need to establish a dedicated maternal intensive care unit to provide timely and specialised treatment for high-risk mothers. The event also highlighted secondary prevention of cervical cancer through HPV testing to ensure early detection and better outcomes for women.
Azra Fazal Pechuho, Sindh’s health and population minister, attended the ceremony and reaffirmed her support for public health initiatives focused on women’s wellbeing. She planted a tree at the event, describing it as a symbol of hope and renewal.
Organisers acknowledged the contributions of Prof Amjad Siraj Memon, vice-chancellor of JSMU, for backing initiatives to improve patient care, and Dr Khalid Sher for strengthening tertiary healthcare services. Tahir Sangi was also recognised for his administrative leadership.
Participants stressed that maternal mortality is not merely a statistic but a collective responsibility. They pledged continued efforts to enhance maternal healthcare services and protect the lives of women across Sindh.
