Maulana Fazlur Rehman argues that if this practice is to continue, parliament should be afforded similar rights and privileges, suggesting that the current system unfairly favors certain institutions over others

ISLAMABAD: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the prominent leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has voiced strong objections to the practice of granting extensions to military officials, calling the policy “flawed” and suggesting it should apply equally to members of parliament. Speaking in the National Assembly, Rehman reflected on past instances where military extensions were approved under significant pressure, questioning why lawmakers do not receive similar consideration.
Rehman condemned the current judicial system as “outdated,” urging a collaborative effort between the government and opposition to implement meaningful judicial reforms. He criticized the judiciary for its perceived politicization, alleging that different courts seem to favor different political factions. This, he argued, undermines the impartiality of the legal system and erodes public trust. Addressing the issue of police protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rehman warned of the severe consequences for national security if law enforcement agencies were to halt their operations. He pointed out that such a scenario could lead to increased insecurity and instability within the country.
Rehman’s criticism extended to the extension process itself, particularly in the military and judiciary. He argued that if this practice is to continue, parliament should be afforded similar rights and privileges, suggesting that the current system unfairly favors certain institutions over others. The JUI-F leader also addressed the significant backlog of judicial cases, noting that over 60,000 cases remain pending in the Supreme Court. To tackle this issue, he proposed the creation of specialized courts to handle constitutional matters, which would help streamline the judicial process and reduce the case load on the Supreme Court.
Rehman concluded his address by emphasizing the need for modernization of Pakistan’s judicial system, which he criticized for operating under British-era laws that are no longer suited to contemporary needs. He called for a fundamental overhaul to ensure that parliament is given supreme authority and that the judiciary operates with renewed impartiality and efficiency.
