ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Health Services, Syed Mustafa Kamal, announced that the government was taking decisive steps to make Basic Health Units (BHUs) fully functional across the country, aiming to ease the growing pressure on hospitals.
Mustafa Kamal made the remarks while addressing a ceremony held by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in Karachi, where health professionals and officials gathered to discuss ongoing reforms in the country’s healthcare system.
The Minister emphasized that a robust primary healthcare network was essential not only to manage patient loads in larger hospitals but also to ensure that basic medical services reached every community, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
“Strengthening our healthcare system is not just a policy priority, it is a moral imperative,” he said, underlining the government’s commitment to improving access, efficiency, and quality in public health services.
Syed Mustafa Kamal highlighted that revitalizing BHUs would allow citizens to receive timely care close to their homes, preventing minor illnesses from escalating into serious conditions and reducing overcrowding in tertiary hospitals.
He also acknowledged the dedication of healthcare professionals, noting that their expertise and resilience were critical to implementing reforms and achieving sustainable improvements in public health.
The Minister’s address reflected growing concerns over the strain on Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure, where rising patient numbers, limited resources, and uneven access had long posed significant challenges.
His remarks came at a time when policymakers are seeking long-term strategies to bridge gaps in primary care, strengthen preventive medicine, and ensure that the country’s health system could respond more effectively to both routine medical needs and emerging health crises.
