KARACHI: At a rally in Liaquatabad, Karachi, federal health minister and Mustafa Kamal issued a fiery denunciation of the federal government and the 18th constitutional amendment, saying he cursed the ministry “so that my children should fall into a drain and die.”
Speaking to a large gathering of MQM-Pakistan supporters, Kamal warned that the party should not be underestimated despite its quieter public presence. “We have decided that death is better than this life if we cannot struggle for our rights,” he said. He rejected allegations of ethnic politics and reaffirmed his opposition to certain constitutional amendments, saying he would oppose the 18th amendment if the government rejected proposed 26th and 27th amendments.
He criticized the Pakistan People’s Party, accusing it of refusing to recognize MQM-P’s role and rejecting its constitutional amendments regarding local government. Kamal revisited population controversies in Karachi, noting that President Asif Ali Zardari had once claimed the city’s population exceeded 30 million, whereas a later government figure of 13 million, he alleged, was manipulated.
According to Kamal, correct counting would show Karachi’s population at 35 million and Hyderabad’s at 4 million, which would increase representation and influence local elections. Kamal stressed that this was not the old MQM-P, but a party representing every area of Karachi.
The MQM-P leader concluded by calling Karachi “the fourth worst city in the world” and urged the federal government to immediately approve MQM-P’s constitutional amendments, framing it as a matter of fairness and recognition for the city and its people.
