KARACHI: Karachi police said they foiled an armed robbery in the city’s eastern district early on Thursday, arresting two suspects following a brief but intense exchange of gunfire. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zubair Nazir Sheikh, the encounter took place on Shuhada-e-Millat Road, with both individuals sustaining injuries before being taken into custody.
Authorities reported that officers recovered two pistols, ammunition, a snatched mobile phone, and a motorcycle linked to the alleged crime. The suspects were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, police added, while investigations were underway to determine their identities and previous criminal records.
Local law enforcement described the operation as part of a broader effort to curb armed robberies and street crime in Karachi, particularly in areas prone to such incidents during the early hours. Residents of Shuhada-e-Millat Road expressed relief at the swift action, noting that such police interventions are crucial to maintaining public safety in neighborhoods frequently targeted by criminals.
Police officials said they were continuing enquiries to ascertain whether the suspects were connected to other cases in the city and stressed that measures would be taken to prevent repeat offences. The episode highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Karachi’s police in tackling violent street crime and their reliance on rapid-response operations to apprehend armed offenders while minimizing risk to civilians.
