KARACHI: Mayor Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated the repair and rehabilitation of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s incineration plant in Mewa Shah, Trans Lyari, aiming to improve the safe disposal of medical and industrial waste across the city.

The upgraded facility, equipped with modern cyclone technology, has a daily capacity of 10 tons and is designed to process hazardous waste that was previously dumped irresponsibly, posing environmental and public health risks. Wahab said the addition of a carbon monoxide dilution system would significantly reduce smoke emissions and pollution, ensuring a cleaner environment for nearby residents.

He stressed that all hospitals and industrial units in Karachi must adhere to prescribed waste disposal procedures, warning that illegal recycling or sale of medical waste would face strict legal action. KMC vehicles will also collect waste from facilities lacking proper disposal mechanisms.
Describing the project as a long-term investment for future generations, Wahab noted that approximately 50 tons of medical and industrial waste are generated daily in the city. He also highlighted other ongoing development initiatives, including flyovers in Cattle Colony and Azimpura, improvements at Mewa Shah graveyard, and the reactivation of water treatment plants aimed at reducing marine pollution.
The mayor reaffirmed the KMC’s commitment to public service and urban development, saying practical progress would continue despite political criticism, with a focus on delivering tangible benefits to Karachi’s residents.
