KARACHI: The Karachi Development Authority (KDA) fake recruitment scandal has taken a dramatic turn, with the People’s Labour Bureau and People’s Labour Union KDA denouncing recent actions by the KDA and accusing them of a broader conspiracy against the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Sindh Government.
Following the suspension of salaries for 53 employees suspected of being falsely recruited and the suspension of five KDA officers by the Local Government Minister, the controversy has intensified. A three-member inquiry committee was formed to investigate the matter. However, Aslam Sumo, President of the People’s Labour Bureau (Karachi Division), and Muhammad Ashraf, Patron-in-Chief of the People’s Labour Union KDA, have criticized these measures, alleging that the list of suspected employees issued by the KDA Secretary is flawed and politically motivated.
The leaders claimed that the list includes names of long-serving employees who have been with the KDA for over a decade, accusing KDA officials of including these names based on personal biases rather than concrete evidence. They argue that the suspension of salaries for legally employed staff, under the guise of combating fake recruitments, constitutes a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the PPP, the Sindh Government, and the Local Government Minister, Sindh.
A delegation led by Sumo and Ashraf, along with Amin Baloch, Rao Tariq, Zeeshan Qayyum, and Naveed Ahmed, met with KDA Director-General Syed Shujaat Hussain to address their grievances. The delegation expressed their concerns over the unjust suspension of salaries and alleged that the entire exercise was an unfair crackdown on legitimate employees. They urged Director-General Hussain to take corrective measures and ensure that actions are based on factual evidence rather than personal preferences.
Director-General Hussain assured the delegation that no employee would be unfairly treated and that any action would only be taken after a thorough and impartial investigation. Sumo and Ashraf emphasized that the PPP’s commitment to “Roti, Kapra, Aur Makaan” (bread, clothing, and shelter) goes beyond slogans and is reflected in its actions. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the orders suspending the salaries of the 53 employees and urged that no salaries be halted until the investigation is complete.
The leaders also called upon the Minister for Local Government, Sindh, Saeed Ghani, to address the alleged misuse of his authority by KDA officials. They warned that if any employee is wrongfully dismissed or penalized due to personal biases, the People’s Labour Bureau would stand in support of the affected employees.
