KARACHI: Senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) leader and Member of the National Assembly (MNA), Syed Aminul Haq, submitted a calling attention notice in the National Assembly, raising serious concerns over K-Electric’s mismanagement of electricity distribution in Karachi. Haq accused the utility company of operating with a mafia-like approach, ignoring directives from both the federal and provincial governments as well as flouting regulations set by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
In his address to the Assembly, Aminul Haq lambasted K-Electric for its frequent system collapses, especially during rainfall. He noted that the company’s infrastructure, including hundreds of feeders and transformers, often trips at the slightest sign of inclement weather, plunging vast areas of the city into darkness. “K-Electric’s failure to ensure reliable electricity, particularly during monsoon rains, has led to unrelenting chaos,” Haq stated, adding that the unscheduled load shedding further intensifies the daily struggles of Karachi’s residents.
Haq expressed deep frustration over K-Electric’s repeated claims of conducting maintenance work, which often result in prolonged power cuts without any improvement in the service. He called on the Minister for Water and Power to clarify the current power generation capacity of K-Electric and its ability to meet the ever-growing demand of the city. Highlighting the company’s consistent overbilling practices, Haq stressed that despite raking in massive profits, K-Electric has failed to invest meaningfully in upgrading Karachi’s deteriorating power infrastructure.
The MQM-P leader also demanded a detailed report on the investments made by K-Electric over the past five years to improve its distribution system. He questioned why, despite its considerable financial gains, the company has not taken adequate steps to safeguard citizens from outages and electrical failures during the rainy season. Haq raised concerns over the devastating consequences of these failures, which have not only led to property damage but, tragically, to the loss of lives. He demanded transparency regarding any compensation offered to those who suffered as a result of K-Electric’s negligence. In his closing remarks, Syed Aminul Haq urged the government to hold K-Electric accountable for its monopolistic practices and gross mismanagement. He insisted that the citizens of Karachi deserve reliable and affordable electricity, free from the exploitative tendencies of the city’s sole power supplier.
