KARACHI: Karachi’s traffic police have implemented a diversion plan due to the city’s hosting of two Chup Tazia processions today, resulting in significant road closures and traffic rerouting.
Chup Tazia, the final procession of the Muharram mourning period, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Askari. The first procession began at Nishtar Park at 6:30 a.m., moving through MA Jinnah Road, Capri, and Saddar Dawakhana, and concluded at Noor Bagh, Musafir Khana, in Moosa Lane around 11 a.m.
To manage traffic and ensure safety, several roads have been closed, and alternate routes have been designated. Traffic from Gurumandir Chowk is being diverted towards Bahadur Yar Jung Road in Soldier Bazaar. Vehicles from Nazimabad are rerouted through Lasbela Chowk, while traffic from Liaquatabad is redirected to Teen Hatti and Lasbela Chowk. Additionally, those traveling from Garden to MA Jinnah Road are being sent to Gul Plaza via Anklesaria Hospital.
The second Chup Tazia procession will start from Rizvia Society at 1 p.m., proceeding towards Imam Bargah Shah-E-Najaf on Martin Road. Security measures include road closures on the stretch between Water Pump and Karimabad Flyover, and on Altaf Hussain Barelvi Road, between Bara Board and Gujjar Nala Crossing. Traffic from Karimabad Chowk has been diverted to Moosa Colony.
Both processions, observed annually on the 8th of Rabi-ul-Awwal, are subject to tight security arrangements, with streets around the procession routes closed to all traffic. Commuters are advised to follow the specified diversions and plan their travel accordingly. The processions are expected to conclude around 4 p.m., after which traffic is anticipated to return to normal.
