Defence Minister Asif voiced apprehension about the current voting situation, suggesting that the government might not have the required numbers to advance the legislation

ISLAMABAD: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has publicly criticized Maulana Fazlur Rehman for his lack of support regarding the government’s proposed constitutional amendments. Addressing reporters outside the Parliament House on Sunday, Asif expressed concerns over the government’s ability to secure the necessary votes for the amendments, which he indicated may become clearer by Monday morning.
Asif voiced apprehension about the current voting situation, suggesting that the government might not have the required numbers to advance the legislation. “It seems that we do not have the numbers. I have been present in the National Assembly since this morning, and while I cannot confirm the exact numbers, it appears that we were short, which is why the legislation has not moved forward,” he stated.
In his earlier remarks, Asif had also addressed the media to refute inaccurate reports concerning Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s term extension. He emphasized that the ongoing efforts are for the greater good and reassured that despite questions surrounding their intentions, the government is working diligently. Asif expressed hope that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would ultimately lend his support.
The Senate and National Assembly sessions, which were scheduled to deliberate on the crucial constitutional amendments, have been postponed to 12:30 pm on Monday. The government had sought Rehman’s backing through various high-profile meetings. Both President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had separately engaged with him, along with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, all of whom requested his cooperation on the proposed amendments.
