ISLAMABAD: Following the recent arrest of former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief General (retd) Faiz Hameed by the military, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has provided insights into Hameed’s alleged involvement in political developments post-retirement.
In a statement on a private news channel Monday, Asif noted that Hameed, after his retirement in November 2022, had a significant influence on political events. “Knowing Faiz Hameed, he never hesitates to stir things up, especially someone like him who wielded immense power and then had to step back,” Asif remarked. Addressing speculation about Hameed’s possible involvement in the incidents of May 9, Asif suggested that if the rumors are accurate, Hameed might have been involved in a strategic capacity. “He might have provided logistics and used his experience to guide actions aimed at causing greater damage.
While I can’t say this with absolute certainty, the evidence and circumstances suggest his involvement,” Asif added. Asif also highlighted Hameed’s close relationship with former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, noting that their familial connections — their fathers-in-law being close friends — likely strengthened their bond. This relationship might have influenced Hameed’s actions and political maneuvers after his retirement. The military’s announcement on Monday confirmed that Hameed had been taken into custody on charges related to land grabbing and forcibly taking valuables from the owner of a private housing society.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) disclosed that disciplinary proceedings under the Pakistan Army Act had been initiated against Hameed, with a Field General Court Martial now in process. The ISPR further revealed that Hameed was found to have committed multiple violations of the Army Act post-retirement, leading to his current legal and disciplinary troubles.
