PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Khan Afridi reportedly began consulting close allies on Tuesday over the possibility of resigning, according to sources familiar with the matter briefed Daily Metro Morning.
The consultations came amid mounting political pressure, widespread protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and increasing scrutiny over recent judicial and social media developments. The sources, on complete anonymity, further said that CM Afridi convened a secret meeting at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House with trusted aides to assess the rapidly evolving political landscape.
Discussions reportedly centered on the ongoing demonstrations, a recent Peshawar High Court ruling, and the intensity of public criticism circulating across social media platforms. During the meeting, the Chief Minister was said to have remarked, “Given the circumstances that have arisen, perhaps I should consider resigning,” reflecting a candid acknowledgment of the pressures confronting his administration.
Sources emphasized that no formal announcement had yet been made, and that the consultations were part of an internal deliberation process rather than an official statement of intent. Political analysts noted that the potential resignation of Afridi would carry significant implications for governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly as protests and judicial interventions continue to shape the provincial political environment.
The developments also underscore the heightened scrutiny faced by provincial leadership amid a climate of vocal public dissent and growing online criticism. Observers said the situation remained fluid, with both party insiders and opposition figures closely monitoring the Chief Minister’s next steps.
While speculation over a possible resignation has intensified, officials indicated that any decision would be communicated formally once consultations concluded and a consensus was reached among Afridi’s closest advisors.
The Chief Minister’s deliberations highlight the delicate balancing act faced by provincial leaders navigating public unrest, judicial oversight, and political opposition, raising questions about stability and continuity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s administration.
