PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is currently confronting extraordinary challenges, including terrorism and climate-related disasters, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Information and Public Relations, Shafi Jan, said on Friday.
Responding to remarks made by the opposition leader, Shafi Jan highlighted the severe difficulties faced by residents of Tirah Maidan in Khyber District following heavy snowfall. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, Provincial Minister for Local Government and Higher Education Meena Khan Afridi, along with MPA Abdul Ghani, visited the affected areas to assess ongoing relief operations.
Shafi Jan said that the Chief Minister is personally monitoring relief and rescue activities from Peshawar on a continuous basis. Rescue teams from multiple districts are involved in the operations, and affected residents have been shifted to safer locations and temporary shelters. He noted that displacement in certain areas was unavoidable due to the intensity of the snowfall, adding to the hardships of local communities.
Regarding comments on terrorism and military operations, Shafi Jan reiterated that the provincial government’s policy is clear and transparent. He noted that both government and opposition parties had signed a 15-point peace jirga agreement in the provincial assembly, but decisions imposed on the province from outside continue to create serious financial pressure.
He added that the provincial government bore all expenses related to displacement caused by military operations in Bajaur and stated that KP is ready to compare its governance performance with any other province or forum. Shafi Jan criticized the sidelining of the province in the decision-making process and accused certain individuals of being promoted for political blame-shifting.
The official also called on federal legislators elected through Form-47 to resign, asserting that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi maintains a zero-tolerance policy on corruption. He added that while KP’s records on transparency have been highlighted in IMF reports, the federal government must answer allegations of Rs5,300 billion in corruption before levelling accusations at the province.
