KARACHI: The University of Karachi (KU) has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with eight towns administered by Jamaat-e-Islami to enhance transport facilities for students. The ceremony took place at the KU Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, each participating town will repair, restore, and hand over one KU point bus in fully operational condition, ensuring safer and more reliable travel for students. Officials from Gulberg, North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Model Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, New Karachi, and Jinnah East towns were present to sign the MoU alongside KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi. The towns have indicated plans to expand the initiative by restoring additional buses in the next fiscal year.

Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi described Karachi as a “Mini Pakistan” and highlighted KU’s role as the city’s academic hub. He noted that the university’s growing student population makes the restoration of point buses a highly commendable step. He added that while KU strives to provide quality transport facilities despite limited resources, further improvements are needed. The vice chancellor also emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in the restoration and expansion of the university’s transport fleet, with this MoU representing a key step in that process.
The signing ceremony was attended by KU Registrar Professor Dr Imran Ahmad Siddiqui, deans, faculty members, the transport unit staff, and officials from the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization. Participants praised the initiative as student-friendly and a positive development for educational progress, reiterating their commitment to continue supporting KU in the future.
