    KU syndicate approves key nominations

    The Syndicate of the University of Karachi (KU), chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, convened on Wednesday at the VC Secretariat to approve a series of important nominations and to acknowledge the university staff involved in protecting KU’s land from illegal encroachment.

    During the meeting, Sadiqa Salahuddin was nominated as a Syndicate member on the Selection Board, while Professor Dr. Syed Shahbib Ul Hasan and Professor Dr. Anila Amber Malik were nominated as Syndicate representatives on the Advanced Studies and Research Board.

    Several other significant appointments were approved, including Shumaila Samad as Syndicate representative on the Board of Governors of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi, Dr. Hassan Auj on the Board of Governors of the Board of Secondary Education Karachi, and Sohail Akbar Shah and Syed Shakeel Ahmed on the KU Scholarship Committee.

    The Syndicate also endorsed Professor Dr. Basit Ansari and Syed Shakeel Ahmed as representatives for the House Building Loan University of Karachi, Ghufran Alam on the Board of Governors of the Pakistan Study Centre, and Syed Shakeel Ahmed on the Board of Governors of the Applied Economics Research Centre. Sohail Akbar Shah was approved as the Syndicate representative on the Selection Board of the Applied Economics Research Centre.

    Additional nominations included Sadiqa Salahuddin on the Board of Governors of Clinical Psychology, Sahibzada Muazzam Qureshi on the Board of Governors of Sheikh Zayed Islamic Research Centre, Sohail Akbar Shah on the Board of Governors of the Dr. Muhammad Ajmal Khan Institute of Sustainable Halophyte Utilization, Professor Dr. Muhammad Haris Shoaib on the Board of Governors of the Dr. Zafar Zaidi National Center for Proteomics, Shumaila Samad on the Board of Governors of the National Nematological Research Centre, Syed Shakeel Ahmed on the Executive Board of Umaer Basha Institute of Information Technology, and Professor Dr. Nusrat Idrees on the Board of Governors of Dr. A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.

    The Syndicate also approved the nomination of Sohail Akbar Shah as its representative on the Executive Board and Selection Board of the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry. Furthermore, chairperson nominations for various departments were confirmed, while hardship cases were deferred in light of a directive from the Universities and Boards Department.

    During the session, members of the Syndicate commended the immediate action taken by Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi and Director General Anti-Corruption Establishment Sindh Imtiaz Abro in addressing the illegal encroachment on KU land and the cancellation of the No Objection Certificate for the unauthorized fuel station. It was recommended that appreciation certificates and letters be issued to KU employees who played a pivotal role in safeguarding the university’s property.

    The minutes of the Syndicate meeting held on 18 October 2025 were approved, along with the report on the implementation of its resolutions. The meeting concluded with prayers offered for the forgiveness of those who lost their lives in the Gul Plaza tragedy and for the speedy recovery of the injured.

    The session highlighted KU’s dual focus on administrative governance and campus security, reinforcing the university’s commitment to academic excellence, institutional transparency, and the protection of its land and resources.
