LAHORE: After nearly 20 years, Lahore was once again awash in the colors of Basant as the three-day kite festival officially kicked off at midnight.
Punjab Information Minister, Azma Bukhari, inaugurated the festival by flying the first kite, setting the tone for the celebrations across the city. Lahore’s skies were soon filled with hundreds of brightly colored kites, while rooftops buzzed with kite flying and lively chatter. Enthusiastic young people took to the streets to watch the soaring and falling kites, adding to the festive spirit.
Women were prominent participants in the celebrations, adorning their hands with henna, wearing colorful outfits, and enjoying traditional festival foods. Many also took to the rooftops themselves to fly kites, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere.
After flying kites late into the night, festival-goers visited local breakfast spots before heading to Mochi Gate in large numbers to purchase kite-flying supplies. Streets and alleys across the city were decked with kites and threads, which were in high demand despite rising prices.
To accommodate the crowds, the city’s transport authorities announced special bus services along key festival routes. The Punjab government confirmed that Basant festivities will continue for three days. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz shared a video on social media marking the festival’s start, showing people joyfully flying kites across the city.
