MOSCOW: In a recent diplomatic exchange underscoring the strategic alignment between Russia and China, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accentuated the pivotal role that their countries play within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During a high-level meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasit, Lavrov praised the synergy between Moscow and Beijing as they work to reinforce ASEAN’s position in global diplomacy.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia and China’s substantial capabilities, bolstered by their participation in influential multilateral organizations such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), significantly enhance their joint efforts with ASEAN. He argued that this robust collaboration is instrumental in addressing both global and regional challenges, and is fully aligned with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
In his remarks, Lavrov characterized ASEAN as the “core” of regional efforts aimed at fostering a stable, non-aligned development trajectory in the Asia-Pacific region. This statement highlights Russia’s view of ASEAN not merely as a regional bloc, but as a cornerstone in the pursuit of a more equitable and balanced global order. Russia sees ASEAN as central to advancing stability and cooperation in Asia, and is keen to leverage its partnership with China to support and strengthen the organization’s role.
Lavrov’s comments reflect a growing strategic convergence between Moscow and Beijing. The two nations are increasingly aligning their diplomatic efforts to support ASEAN’s objectives, reinforcing their shared interests in promoting stability and cooperation through multilateral platforms. This alignment signifies a broader geopolitical strategy where Russia and China are not only enhancing their bilateral relationship but also working together to bolster ASEAN’s influence on the world stage.
The endorsement of ASEAN’s central role by Russia, alongside China, underscores a concerted effort to counterbalance the influence of Western powers and promote a multipolar world order. Moscow’s support for ASEAN’s leadership and its collaborative engagement with Beijing represent a significant strategic move aimed at reshaping global diplomacy in favor of a more inclusive and balanced international system.
