The NDMA has urged relevant departments to implement precautionary measures to manage the ongoing flooding and mitigate the adverse effects of the severe weather

QUETTA: A significant flood has caused extensive damage to a crucial gas pipeline, leading to a major disruption in gas supply across Quetta and several surrounding cities in Balochistan. The flood, which struck late Thursday night, affected an 18-inch diameter pipeline operated by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in the Bolan area.
According to an SSGC spokesperson, the flood has severely damaged the pipeline, resulting in the suspension of gas supplies to Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Kolpur Machh, Pishin, and other neighboring areas. The disruption has caused considerable inconvenience to residents and businesses relying on natural gas for their daily operations. Repair work on the damaged pipeline is set to commence, but it is currently on hold pending security clearance due to ongoing law and order issues in the region. The SSGC has emphasized that the restoration of gas supply will be prioritized once it is safe to carry out the necessary repairs.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported extensive damage across the region following recent heavy rains. The floods have impacted 2,293 properties, with 734 completely destroyed and 1,559 partially damaged. In addition, over 44 kilometers of roads and 30 bridges nationwide have been affected by the severe weather conditions. In response to the crisis, the NDMA has urged relevant departments to implement precautionary measures to manage the ongoing flooding and mitigate the adverse effects of the severe weather.
The authority is coordinating with local agencies to address the immediate needs of affected communities and ensure the swift restoration of essential services. The flood-induced damage to the gas pipeline has highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure to extreme weather events. As efforts continue to repair the pipeline and address the broader impact of the floods, authorities are working to restore normalcy and support those affected by the severe weather. The situation remains under close monitoring, with further updates expected as recovery and repair work progresses.
