LAKKI MARWAT: Police foiled a major sabotage attempt on Tuesday after defusing an improvised explosive device (IED) that had been planted in a residential area, officials said. The device, discovered near a gas pump in Mohallah Railway Station, prompted an immediate response from a heavy police contingent and the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), who worked swiftly to prevent a potential catastrophe.

Station House Officer Imran Khan said authorities had received timely information about the suspicious device, which was located along Mianwali Road. On inspection, the IED was found to contain roughly 40 kilograms of explosive material concealed inside a small drum, along with two detonators, a 12-volt battery, and an electronic circuit, suggesting a highly dangerous and carefully planned attack.

“The swift action of our personnel prevented a potential tragedy and saved numerous lives,” SHO Khan said, praising the coordination between local police and the Bomb Disposal Squad. He added that the rapid mobilization underscored the importance of intelligence-led operations in safeguarding residential areas and critical infrastructure.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the origins of the device and identify the individuals or groups behind the plot. While no suspects had been apprehended immediately, police said they were reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing local residents, and analyzing the recovered materials to trace the source of the explosives.

Residents in the area expressed relief at the outcome, noting that the alert response had prevented what could have been a devastating incident in a densely populated neighborhood. Security officials emphasized the need for vigilance and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity promptly.

The successful defusal of the IED was seen as a testament to law enforcement’s preparedness and the ongoing efforts to counter threats in urban areas, even as authorities warned that the risk of sabotage attempts remains a pressing concern.
