KARACHI: A man, identified as Atif alias Vicky Babu, has been arrested in Karachi for impersonating a police officer in TikTok videos. The arrest was made on Wednesday by Al-Falah police during a routine patrol, as confirmed by SSP Korangi Touheed Rehman Memon. The suspect, who gained popularity on social media for his videos, was caught filming content while dressed in a police uniform. A case has been registered against him at the Al-Falah police station.
This incident follows the suspension of two police constables in the South Zone on September 4, including a female officer, for creating TikTok videos while on duty. The videos, which went viral, prompted disciplinary action.
DIG South Syed Asad Raza ordered the suspension of Constable Maria Gil, who was stationed at the Gizri police station, after she disclosed her duty location in a video, saying, “Guys, I am here, whoever wants to meet me can come here.” Raza emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable in a professional institution like the police force. A report was also demanded from the officer regarding the incident.
In a separate case, SSP City Arif Aziz took strict action against Constable Zeeshan from Baghdadi police station for a TikTok video in which the officer displayed firearms. The video, recorded in 2022, was uploaded in 2023. SSP Aziz ordered the officer’s suspension and instructed him to report to his office, stressing that the misuse of firearms by police officers is prohibited.
Meanwhile, another TikTok-related incident occurred on September 4, when a youth killed his teacher over a debt of 500 rupees. Sheikh Adnan, a shopkeeper in Qissa Khwani, had employed the accused, Mukhtar, as an apprentice ten years ago. After being influenced by violent content on TikTok and Pashto films, Mukhtar became prone to frequent altercations. Six months ago, Adnan dismissed him from the shop, which led to the fatal confrontation.
Authorities are closely monitoring the misuse of social media platforms like TikTok, particularly when it involves illegal or inappropriate behavior by individuals and public officials.
