KARACHI: In a tragic incident in Karachi, a man has been accused of murdering his sister-in-law and her tenant in what appears to be an act of so-called honour. The killings occurred near Rana Ground, Baldia Jungle School. According to SHO Ittehad Town, Rao Shabbir, the victims have been identified as 32-year-old Sonia, the wife of Tanveer, and 38-year-old Muhammad Irshad, the son of Lal Dad Shah.
Initial investigations suggest that the motive behind the murders was honour-related. Sonia’s brother-in-law, Mustafa, is alleged to be the shooter. Sonia’s husband is currently abroad for work, and Mustafa had harboured suspicions that Irshad was involved in an illicit relationship with Sonia. Mustafa used a 30-bore pistol to carry out the shootings before fleeing the scene.
Mustafa, originally from the Hazara district, remains at large. The police are actively conducting raids to capture him. Human rights activists have noted that honour-based violence is alarmingly common in Pakistan, with approximately 1,000 women killed annually in the name of honour. Unofficial statistics from southern Sindh province indicate that at least 217 individuals, including 152 women, were murdered in honour-related crimes in 2022.
