TEHRAN: Tens of thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran’s Revolution Square on Wednesday for the funeral of Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike along with his son and the commander of the Basij paramilitary force.
The crowds, many chanting “Allahu Akbar,” filled the square for the mass procession for Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij. The ceremony also honoured dozens of navy personnel killed in a separate US torpedo attack on an Iranian ship off the coast of Sri Lanka on 4 March.
Larijani, a former parliamentary speaker and close adviser to the late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on Tuesday in an Israeli strike on eastern Tehran. His son, Morteza, and several bodyguards also died in the attack. Soleimani was confirmed killed in the bombardment.
The deaths mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance, which began on 28 February with the killing of Khamenei. Since then, the war has expanded to include Iranian strikes on Gulf nations and Israeli bombardment of Lebanon.
At the funeral, senior Iranian officials and military commanders vowed revenge. The commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters warned that the US president should expect a “surprise,” with Iran’s response set to be “extraordinary.” Army chief Maj Gen Amir Hatami also pledged that revenge would be taken “at any cost.”
Following the attacks that killed Larijani and Soleimani, Iran launched fresh missile strikes on Israel, claiming to have used new “Haj Qasem” missiles. Sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, with reports of fires and damage. The Revolutionary Guards claimed 200 Israelis were killed or wounded, while Israeli media reported two dead and several injured.
