KARACHI: The mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, inaugurated a family park in Ibrahim Hyderi on Saturday and laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of Mehrunisa Hospital Road linking the area to Korangi.

Speaking to reporters, Wahab said the neighborhood had once been barren but now had a bus terminal and public park to improve transport and recreation. He added that work on Korangi Causeway Road and the construction of Shahrah-e-Bhutto formed part of the same development drive, which had reached Quaidabad and was expected to extend towards Kathore in the coming months.
The road would be opened to traffic within days, he said. The mayor said the Sindh government had accelerated development projects across the city and that the Bhains Colony flyover was also nearing inauguration, with a target of completion within 100 working days. He said about Rs46bn would be spent on development schemes in Karachi this year, alongside additional allocations by the provincial government.
According to Wahab, 25 new roads would be built across Karachi’s seven districts, while 106 internal and main roads were also planned for construction or rehabilitation. He said long-standing issues in Ibrahim Hyderi and Korangi would be addressed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, including the reconstruction of the PF Gate used daily by large numbers of commuters.
Before road construction, he said, drainage improvements were required because of nearby hospitals and industrial units. The project was expected to cost between Rs450m and Rs500m. Wahab said 120 pumping stations affected by load shedding were being converted to solar power in phases to strengthen the drainage system. He added that efforts were under way to ensure equitable water supply and to address the concerns of the fishing community.
Referring to political criticism of development works, the mayor said practical measures were the true test of public service. He also noted recent debates in provincial assemblies over administrative matters and said cooperation between the federal education ministry and the city authorities would continue on urban development.
He announced that cricket matches would be screened for the public at Safari Park and Karachi Zoo to provide recreational opportunities for residents, and reiterated his commitment to prioritising civic improvements across the city.
