MEHAR: Umme Rubab Chandio said in a video statement that the incident involving Dr Fahmida Laghari had been deeply tragic, as she condemned what had happened and expressed solidarity with the victim’s family.
She said Dr Fahmida was not just a name but a question, describing her as a third-year medical student whose dream had been to save lives. However, she said, her suicide had raised serious questions about the system. She asked what reasons had made her feel unsafe within an educational institution, why she had ended her bright future, and why she had suffered in silence without expressing her pain.
She added that suicides within educational institutions raised many concerns, particularly regarding harassment, which she said must be taken seriously. Authorities and institutions, she said, needed to reflect on the issue. In a region where the literacy rate was already low, such incidents further discouraged families from sending their daughters to educational institutions.
She pointed out that similar tragic cases had occurred before, including those of Naila Rind and Priya Kumari, among others. She said parents already hesitated many times before allowing their daughters to pursue education.
She questioned whether educational institutions were still safe or whether they had become places of tragedy.
Umme Rubab Chandio called on the Chief Justice, the Inspector General of Sindh Police and human rights organisations to take notice of the matter. She urged that a proper investigation be carried out through a joint inquiry team to uncover the truth and ensure justice for the affected family.
She emphasised that justice must be delivered without delay and questioned why a medical student had felt her future was not secure. She added that behind every suicide there were underlying reasons and possibly responsible individuals.
She concluded by urging institutions to seriously consider the stance of the victim’s family and to take immediate action so that no other girl’s future would be put at risk.
