SUKKUR: An orientation meeting for the project titled “Protection of Rights of Women and Minorities in Northern Sindh” was convened at the Bhittai Social Watch and Advocacy (BSWA) head office in Khairpur. The meeting was chaired by Meritorious Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur.

The project, a collaborative effort between BSWA, the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), aims to establish a platform for debate and dialogue on the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda in Sindh. The initiative focuses on addressing gender stereotypes and enhancing women’s participation in peace-building processes, especially in Northern Sindh.

Fozia Hanif, Manager Programs at BSWA, and Abdul Jabbar Khaskheli, Program Advisor, provided an overview of the project’s objectives and the activities conducted since 2013 in partnership with Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur. The project seeks to build community resilience against extremist tendencies and the impacts of climate change through innovative and creative strategies. It also aims to change academic discourse with a focus on issues of women, peace, and security.

As part of the project’s first phase, academic institutions will be integrated into the Consortium. These institutions include Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University Sukkur, Aror University of Art, Architecture, Design & Heritage Rohri, Shaikh Ayaz University Shikarpur, and the University of Larkano.

Notable attendees included Syed Ahmed Fawad Shah, Deputy Commissioner Khairpur; Prof. (Rtd.) Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari, Academic Advisor at BSWA; Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Assistant Professor and Focal Person for the project; Habibullah Mallah, Board Member at BSWA; and Ali Gul Mallah, Incharge DIB Khairpur.
