KARACHI: Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has rejected calls to resign, insisting he will not step down at the behest of political rivals. Speaking in response to MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar’s recent press conference, Memon accused the party of politicizing the aftermath of the Gul Plaza tragedy.
“MQM-P has been playing politics since the second day after the incident,” Memon said. He emphasised that his government has not blocked the formation of a judicial commission and will act on its recommendations once the final report is submitted. “The report is not yet complete. Meanwhile, MQM-P is creating a spectacle,” he added.
Memon pointed out the inconsistency in MQM-P’s demands. “Until yesterday, they were calling for the resignations of the Sindh Chief Minister and the Karachi Mayor. When we responded to their criticism, suddenly they demanded my resignation too,” he said. He also highlighted ongoing investigative efforts, noting that forensic experts from Lahore have been invited to ensure the inquiry reaches a conclusive outcome.
“We will not act on MQM-P’s orders. These are matters of accountability, not political theatre,” he stressed. Memon further criticized the party for previously shutting down the city at their leader’s command. “I will not resign simply because MQM wants me to. I will only step down if the party leadership directs it,” he said, rejecting allegations regarding the withdrawal of security.
