JERUSALEM: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India stands “firmly” with Israel during his address to lawmakers in Jerusalem. The remarks came during the high-profile Modi Israel visit aimed at strengthening trade and defence ties.

Addressing the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Israel following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas. He conveyed condolences on behalf of the Indian people for lives lost in the assault.

“We feel your pain, we share your grief. India stands with Israel firmly with full conviction in this moment and beyond,” Modi said in his speech.

During his two-day visit, Modi met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to deepen cooperation in trade, defence and technology. A red carpet welcome was arranged for Modi at Ben Gurion Airport, where Netanyahu greeted him warmly.

Speaking at the Knesset, Modi described the Hamas attack as a “barbaric terrorist” act. However, he did not directly mention the tens of thousands of Palestinians reported killed in Gaza during the prolonged war between Israel and Hamas.

He said India supports all efforts that contribute to “durable peace and regional stability” in the region.

Modi highlighted growing cooperation between the two countries, pointing to India’s rapid economic growth and Israel’s strength in technological innovation. He said there were strong opportunities for collaboration in quantum technologies, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Netanyahu’s office described the meeting between the two leaders as warm and friendly, calling it a reflection of a strong personal bond. In a post on X, Modi termed the talks “excellent”, while Netanyahu hailed the partnership as a “real friendship”.

This marks Modi’s second visit to Israel since taking office in 2014, underlining the steady expansion of ties between the two nations.
