Heavy rains in province lead to 44 livestock deaths, with 100 homes fully destroyed and 145 partially damaged

LAHORE: The ongoing monsoon rains in Punjab have taken a severe toll, with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reporting 84 fatalities, 224 injuries, and damage to 245 homes. The deaths are primarily due to lightning strikes, electrocution, and the collapse of mud houses and dilapidated buildings, according to a PDMA spokesperson.
Additionally, 44 livestock have perished, and the affected homes include 100 that were completely destroyed and 145 that were partially damaged. Financial assistance is being provided to the impacted families, and medical treatment is being ensured for the injured. With additional rain forecasted over the next 24 hours, flash flood warnings have been issued for southern Punjab, particularly in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasized that the situation is being monitored around the clock, with preparations in place for any emergency. Concerns are also raised about water levels in key rivers and dams. Low-level flooding is reported in the Indus River at Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Chashma, with a medium-level flood at Taunsa. In contrast, the Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Jhelum rivers are flowing at normal levels. The Mangla Dam is currently at 70 percent capacity, while the Tarbela Dam is nearly full at 99 percent.
Indian dams on the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers are at 54 percent capacity. The PDMA urges residents to take safety precautions during the monsoon season. People are advised to avoid staying in vulnerable buildings, minimize travel during adverse weather, and maintain distance from power lines and poles. For emergency assistance, the PDMA helpline is available at 1129.
