PALERMO, ITALY: Divers are continuing their search efforts for six missing individuals, including prominent British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, following the sinking of a luxury yacht off Sicily’s coast amid a severe storm. The tragedy occurred on Monday when the British-flagged superyacht, Bayesian, capsized during an intense pre-dawn storm.
The 56-meter-long vessel was anchored near the port of Porticello when the storm struck. Out of the 22 people onboard, fifteen managed to escape before the yacht capsized. The body of one individual has been recovered, but the remaining six—Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Morgan Stanley International non-executive chairman Jonathan Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and their two wives—are still missing.
The yacht sank in waters approximately 49 meters (160 feet) deep, complicating rescue efforts. Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily, expressed concerns that the missing bodies may be trapped inside the vessel. Divers are facing significant challenges due to the depth of the wreck, limiting their time underwater. Marco Tilotta, a fire department diver, noted the difficulty of the situation, stating that the team must search the wreck “centimeter by centimeter.”
