KARACHI: The Vice Chairman of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), Shaukat Ullah Farooqi, has issued a stark warning over the deteriorating infrastructure of Karachi, citing persistent mismanagement, poor planning, and corruption by the Sindh government as the root causes.

Farooqi made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation of senior citizens from Liaquatabad, led by Afaq Ahmed, at his residence. He said that roads have turned into ruins, the sewage system has collapsed, manholes are overflowing, and even light rainfall paralyzes the city’s daily life.

“Despite billions of rupees allocated for development, roads remain unsustainable, and fundamental issues such as water, electricity, and transport have not been resolved,” he noted. According to research, lack of transparency in development projects, substandard construction materials, and contractor mafia protection are central to the city’s collapse.

Farooqi emphasized that Karachi’s residents, despite paying taxes, are deprived of basic amenities, while responsible authorities continue blaming each other. He stressed that without immediate reforms, transparent accountability, and the implementation of a fully empowered local government system, the city’s infrastructure will completely deteriorate, with disastrous consequences for both the economy and everyday life.

He warned that centralization of powers, bureaucratic control over funds, and the provincial government’s dominance have rendered municipal institutions ineffective, resulting in failing roads, drainage, sanitation, and other essential services. Experts and civic groups agree that until locally elected representatives are granted financial and administrative autonomy, urban challenges cannot be effectively addressed, and the city will continue its decline.

Farooqi concluded that empowering genuine local representatives is critical to saving Karachi, and failure to do so will make urban collapse unavoidable.
