KARACHI: During a session of the Sindh Assembly, MQM-P MPA Rana Shaukat accused fellow lawmakers of issuing death threats against him, prompting the speaker to summon police to the house.

Shaukat alleged that his colleague Sharq Jamal had threatened him. He further claimed that former PSP MNA Iqbal Mehsud, along with armed associates, had also issued threats, stating that Shaukat was affiliated with the Khalid Maqbool group and warning him to leave.

“I request that my FIR be registered through the relevant police station,” Shaukat said, adding that failing that, he would resign from the assembly. He stressed that he was born in Sindh and would not tolerate threats to his life.

Sindh’s provincial interior minister, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjari, said such incidents were inappropriate within the house and that security arrangements must be made for the member. He added that police statements should be recorded and urged the assembly to suspend membership temporarily if necessary.

Opposition leader Ali Khursheedi suggested temporarily suspending the issue to continue routine proceedings, proposing a one-hour window to resolve the matter. The assembly speaker instructed officials to summon the SSP and local SHO to record statements. The episode highlights rising tensions within the house and concerns over the safety of assembly members amid ongoing political rivalries.
