KARACHI: The chairman of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P), Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif this week, calling for the establishment of a high-level, independent commission to investigate the Gul Plaza disaster. The building, which collapsed days earlier in Karachi, has left families mourning and raised questions about safety and oversight in the city’s construction sector.
In his letter, Siddiqui urged that the proposed “Gul Plaza Inquiry Commission” operate transparently to uncover facts and identify those responsible for the tragedy. He recommended that the panel include representatives from multiple federal institutions, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), intelligence agencies such as the MI and ISI, as well as the State Bank, NESPAK, and other relevant organizations.
Siddiqui also called on the federal government and law enforcement agencies to immediately oversee rescue and relief operations. He emphasized the need to protect lives, provide assistance to the injured, and safeguard the property and valuables of those affected. To support victims, he proposed the creation of a federally administered “Relief and Rehabilitation Fund,” which could provide financial aid to families who lost loved ones or suffered material losses.
Observers said Siddiqui’s call for a high-level inquiry reflects growing frustration with delays and the perceived lack of accountability in the aftermath of major disasters. Analysts suggested that a transparent federal commission could help restore public confidence, ensure justice for victims, and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
