ISLAMABAD: Tensions flared during a National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination meeting, as MQM-P leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan and PPP lawmaker Shahla Raza engaged in a sharp verbal exchange over the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) elections and related scrutiny issues.

Khawaja Izharul Hassan accused Shahla Raza of representing a private company whose stakeholders had previously been barred by the PHF. He argued that certain matters had already been designated for the Public Accounts Committee and criticized repeated claims questioning the legitimacy of the PHF president.

MQM-P leader emphasized that if the Prime Minister had appointed the official, the appointment was legal, and alleged that advocacy for the private company was being pursued on the basis of stubbornness rather than law.

Shahla Raza countered by stating that Tariq Bugti, tasked with overseeing the elections, had prioritized becoming president himself and had registered favored clubs. She called for immediate elections for the Hockey Federation, citing past criticisms by the Sports Board regarding its performance.

PPP leader also highlighted concerns about financial irregularities and mismanagement, adding that even the Additional Attorney General had deemed the elections unlawful.

The exchange grew tense as both lawmakers insisted on their legal interpretations. Khawaja Izharul Hassan requested that repetitive points be avoided to maintain focus, while Shahla Raza maintained that the committee would act strictly according to law, asserting that no one could ignore the Attorney General’s assessment that the elections violated legal and constitutional provisions.
