NEW DEHLI: Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer led by Elon Musk, appears to be taking a cautious approach towards India, focusing on retail presence rather than local manufacturing, according to H.D. Kumaraswamy, India’s Minister for Heavy Industries.
Speaking at a recent press conference, Kumaraswamy revealed that while Tesla has shown interest in opening showrooms across the country, the company has not yet expressed any concrete plans to establish manufacturing facilities on Indian soil. The stance contrasts sharply with several European carmakers, who have demonstrated a clear willingness to invest in building vehicles domestically.
The announcement comes at a time when Tesla’s ambitions in India have faced heightened scrutiny, not just locally but internationally. Former US President Donald Trump earlier this year criticized the idea of Tesla setting up a factory in India, labelling it “unfair” to American industry. Trump reiterated this view in recent statements, calling on Tesla and other automakers to prioritize manufacturing both vehicles and parts within the United States to protect domestic jobs and industry.
