Committee members stressed the importance of maintaining a strong focus on road maintenance, safety, rural connectivity, and the timely completion of projects

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Communications convened today at 01:00 PM in the Committee Room 02 of the Parliament House, Islamabad, under the Chairmanship of Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, MNA. The meeting featured an extensive briefing from the Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, who provided a detailed overview of the Ministry’s performance, ongoing projects, future initiatives, and challenges.

During the briefing, the Secretary highlighted the Ministry’s achievements in recent years, particularly in infrastructure development and the management of key departments, including the National Highway Authority (NHA), the National Highway and Motorway Police, and Pakistan Post. Significant improvements in key performance indicators were noted, reflecting the Ministry’s successful implementation of several infrastructure projects, especially in the highway and motorway sectors.

The Minister of Communications emphasized the Ministry’s plans to launch new initiatives aimed at increasing revenue without burdening the national exchequer. He noted that these initiatives would be developed with input from all stakeholders and that the Committee’s pre-budget recommendations are invaluable in helping the Ministry enhance and effectively utilize funds. Committee members stressed the importance of maintaining a strong focus on road maintenance, safety, rural connectivity, and the timely completion of projects.

They urged the Ministry to address funding and bureaucratic challenges by exploring innovative solutions and enhancing collaboration with private sector stakeholders. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the ongoing development of the Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M-6) project. The Minister underscored the importance of the M-6, expressing confusion over its previous neglect and highlighting its significant economic value as it will connect key trade transit routes. The M-6 has been designated a top priority for the Ministry in the upcoming Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), with efforts underway to include it in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

In addition to the Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, the meeting was attended by Members of the Standing Committee, including MNA Rana Mubashir Iqbal, MNA Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan Nasir, MNA Haji Jamal Shah Kakar, MNA Akhtar Bibi, MNA Dr. Darshan, MNA Mir Shabbir Ali Bijarani, MNA Nazir Ahmed Bhugio, MNA Syed Mustafa Kamal, MNA Muhammad Awn Saqlain, MNA Mehboob Shah, MNA Ali Khan Jadoon, and MNA Hameed Hussain.
