KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Nehal Hashmi on Friday took oath as Sindh governor, replacing MQM-P’s Kamran Khan Tessori. The oath was administered by Sindh High Court Chief Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput at a ceremony held at the Governor House in Karachi.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab attended, alongside Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar and other provincial ministers. PML-N Sindh president Bashir Memon and several party leaders and workers were also present. Hashmi assumed office a day after President Asif Ali Zardari approved his appointment, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The prime minister had forwarded a summary recommending Hashmi’s name to the president. He later met Hashmi in Islamabad to congratulate him on the appointment. Sources said Tessori had left for Saudi Arabia a day earlier to perform Umrah, planning to stay for a few days. Before leaving, he thanked protocol staff and officials who had come to see him off at the airport.
An MQM-P spokesperson said the party had not been consulted by the federal government before the decision. The spokesperson added that MQM-P would soon decide its next steps after internal discussions. Hashmi, a native of Karachi’s Malir, has been associated with the PML-N for many years. He served as adviser on law and justice to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from 1997 to 1999.
In 2012, he became president of PML-N’s Karachi chapter. Two years later, in August 2014, Hashmi, a lawyer by profession, was appointed general secretary of the party’s Sindh chapter. In 2015, he was elected as a PML-N Senate candidate from a seat allocated to Punjab. His party membership was suspended in 2017 and later restored in 2021.
