KARACHI: The Karachi Press Club’s Literary Committee hosted the launch of British-based senior poet and fiction writer Najma Usman’s two new books, “Khat Likhenge Garche…” and “Whispers of a Broken Branch”, on Tuesday. The event was presided over by Professor Sehr Anisari, with special guests including Dr. Shadat Ehsani, Dr. Fatima Hasan, Dr. Rukhsana Saba, and distinguished speakers Sohail Ahmed, Naseem Anjum, Anjum Mughal, Anjum Usman, Tasneem Hasan, and Kamran Mughal.
Professor Sehr Anisari, in her opening remarks, praised Najma Usman’s command over Urdu, highlighting her contributions to poetry, fiction, novels, and children’s literature. She noted that the title of “Khat Likhenge Garche…” draws from Ghalib’s poetry and that the letters in the book weave history and narrative, almost like a short novel.
Dr. Shadat Ehsani congratulated Najma Usman, emphasizing the literary and emotional depth of her letters, such as “Bikhartay Waqt ke Aseer Lamhe”, which captures poignant moments of separation. He also highlighted letters addressing bereavement and widowhood, noting the sensitive and nuanced portrayal of these experiences.
Dr. Rukhsana Saba observed that epistolary writing has become an important literary form in Urdu. She praised Najma Usman’s personal letters for revealing emotions, memories, and character traits, providing insight into both the writer and the addressee, her late husband. She highlighted the simplicity, fluidity, and clarity of expression in Najma Usman’s writing, noting that her letters balance personal reflection with literary finesse.
Other speakers, including Dr. Fatima Hasan, Sohail Ahmed, Naseem Anjum, Anjum Usman, Tasneem Hasan, and Kamran Mughal, shared insights into Najma Usman’s literary contributions and personal traits, celebrating her achievements as a writer and storyteller.
Najma Usman expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees and speakers, reading excerpts from her books that were warmly received by the audience. She also presented tokens of appreciation to notable literary figures present. The event concluded with a lavish reception for the participants.
The launch highlighted Najma Usman’s ability to blend literary artistry with personal reflection, reaffirming her position as a distinguished and successful writer in contemporary Urdu literature.
