ISLAMABAD: The ongoing discourse regarding the government’s proposed constitutional amendments has seen significant developments, with meetings involving key political figures. According to Express News, Maulana Fazl ur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), is set to engage further in discussions as the debate intensifies.
Sources have revealed that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, accompanied by his brother and current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will visit Maulana Fazl ur Rehman at his residence on Sunday. The primary objective of this visit is to persuade Rehman to lend his support to the proposed constitutional changes. Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Islamabad from Lahore, alongside PML-N Vice President Hamza Shehbaz, underscores the significance of these amendments and the high stakes involved in garnering cross-party support.
The proposed amendments encompass over 20 provisions and aim to bring substantial changes to the Constitution. Notably, key modifications are set to impact Articles 51, 63, 175, and 187, which cover electoral representation, disqualification of candidates, the judiciary, and administrative provisions respectively. One of the significant proposals includes increasing the number of seats in the Balochistan Assembly from 65 to 81, aimed at better representation and addressing regional concerns.
The meetings are part of a broader effort to ensure a smooth passage of these amendments through the legislative process. Nawaz Sharif’s strategic engagement with Rehman reflects the PML-N’s commitment to building consensus and securing support for the amendments, which are expected to have wide-ranging implications for the country’s governance and political landscape. As the political maneuvering continues, the outcome of these discussions will be pivotal in shaping the future of Pakistan’s constitutional framework and addressing the various regional and national issues at stake.
