The adjustment is part of the standard quarterly review process to reflect changes in fuel and operational costs over the previous quarter

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced changes in electricity tariffs, which include an increase under quarterly and fuel price adjustments, alongside a reduction in charges for the July fuel cost adjustment. This move will have a mixed impact on consumers, who will see higher costs in some aspects while receiving a slight relief in others.
According to a statement issued by NEPRA on Friday, the authority has approved a quarterly adjustment of Rs1.75 per unit, which has now been sent to the federal government for implementation. This adjustment will be reflected in consumers’ electricity bills for the months of September, October, and November. The adjustment is part of the standard quarterly review process to reflect changes in fuel and operational costs over the previous quarter.
In addition to this quarterly adjustment, an earlier increase of Rs0.93 per unit, which had been applied during the third quarter of FY 2023-24, will end in August. However, a further increase of Rs0.82 per unit will be introduced in September’s bills, making up part of the new quarterly adjustment.
On the positive side for consumers, NEPRA has approved a reduction of 37 paisa per unit in the fuel cost adjustment for July. This reduction will be reflected in September’s bills, offering some relief amid rising costs elsewhere. The public hearing on these adjustments was held on August 28, where stakeholders discussed the changes before they were finalized.
This reduction comes after an earlier increase of Rs2.56 per unit in August bills, which was tied to June’s fuel charge adjustment. With the newly approved reductions, consumers will experience a net relief of Rs2.11 per unit in their September bills, slightly offsetting the impact of the quarterly adjustments.
NEPRA’s adjustments reflect the ongoing volatility in global fuel prices and the need to balance operational costs for power generation in Pakistan. The decision to both increase and reduce charges indicates efforts to stabilize the cost burden on consumers while keeping pace with fluctuating fuel prices.
