KARACHI: Violence and harassment against women remain a persistent problem in Pakistan, and filmmaker Huma Shaikh has brought the issue boldly to the screen with her new film, Item. Premiered on 24 December 2025 across cinemas nationwide, the film has been praised as a powerful portrayal of women’s courage, dignity, and determination.
Item tells the story of Mahnoor, played by Aaliya Ali, the daughter of a disabled father. Forced to abandon her education due to social harassment and slander, she faces the harsh realities of a society governed by double standards. The narrative follows her journey from fear to confidence, as she bravely enters the world of modelling.
Aaliya Ali’s performance has been widely praised for its emotional depth, capturing Mahnoor’s transformation with grace and intensity. Supporting performances from Aima Khan as film star Mehak and newcomer Azad Khan complement the story, while veterans including Behroze Sabzwari, Sangeeta Begum, Mariam Mirza, and Ismat Zaidi add further weight to the cast.
The film’s music, composed by M. Arshad with background scoring by Azhar Hussain and Ali Jeffo, heightens its emotional impact, while cinematography, direction, and dialogue reinforce its social message. A line spoken by an advertising professional to Mahnoor captures the film’s central message: “No field is bad; it is the mindset of people that makes it so.”
The film challenges societal prejudices and advocates for women’s rights and empowerment. Critics and audiences alike have said Item is more than a film. It is a statement against injustice, an artistic reflection of women’s struggles, and a call for dignity, freedom, and equality. Its storytelling ensures the message lingers long after the credits roll.
