ISLAMABAD:Former Pakistani ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said that the international community has not made a serious or coordinated effort to halt the escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, largely because many countries lack confidence in the policies of Donald Trump.
Speaking to the media, Lodhi argued that the absence of trust in Washington’s leadership has made diplomatic mediation extremely difficult. According to her, many governments believe that negotiations led or influenced by Trump cannot be relied upon, because his administration often mixes diplomatic outreach with military escalation. This approach, she said, creates uncertainty about whether talks are genuinely aimed at peace or merely used as a tactic while military pressure continues.
Lodhi noted that effective mediation in international conflicts depends on credibility and consistency. However, she said Trump’s pattern of engaging in dialogue while simultaneously supporting or launching military actions undermines the confidence needed for diplomacy to succeed. When parties involved in a conflict feel that negotiations could be followed by sudden strikes or policy reversals, they become reluctant to engage in meaningful talks.
She further explained that this lack of trust has discouraged other major powers from attempting mediation. Countries that might normally try to broker a ceasefire or facilitate negotiations are hesitant because they believe any diplomatic initiative could collapse if Washington abruptly changes its stance. Analysts say similar concerns have been expressed in the wider crisis, where Iran and others have cited a deep lack of trust in US promises during negotiations.
As a result, Lodhi suggested that the conflict continues without a credible diplomatic pathway. She warned that unless there is a consistent and trusted approach to negotiations, efforts to de-escalate the confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States are likely to remain stalled, raising the risk of further regional instability.
